Program Note:
I completed So soft, so calm, yet eloquent in response to a competition asking for a “love song” for solo piano. As in many love songs, there is a simple melody which defines the piece. In this piece, however, it is often present but just out of plain sight, disguised using register and embellishments.
The title is a line from Lord Byron’s famous poem, “She Walks in Beauty.” Every time I read the poem, I am moved by the way the speaker is overwhelmed by a woman’s grace and unique beauty.
